THE CARE BEHIND EVERY GIFT

A little love.
A lifetime of care.

We want to talk honestly about what that care costs.

It starts with the basics.

Every dog who comes into our rescue needs basic veterinary care before they can be adopted. That usually includes:

  • Spay or neuter surgery
  • Vaccinations
  • Heartworm testing
  • Heartworm prevention
  • Flea and tick prevention
  • Microchipping
  • General examinations
  • Medications and follow-up care

Even routine care adds up quickly.

Some dogs need much more.

Many of the dogs who come to us are not young, healthy dogs who only need a quick checkup and a vaccine. We take in medical dogs, senior dogs, neglected dogs, and dogs who have been failed by people for most of their lives.

Older and medically fragile dogs often need much more extensive care, including:

  • Blood work
  • Urinalysis
  • X-rays and other diagnostic testing
  • Ultrasounds
  • Cardiologist evaluations
  • Specialty consultations
  • Prescription medications
  • Long-term medications
  • Prescription or specialty foods
  • Ongoing monitoring and repeated veterinary visits

Care that continues
every day.

Some dogs arrive with conditions that require care for the rest of their lives.

Some need heart medication. Some need kidney support. Some need treatment for diabetes, seizures, arthritis, thyroid disease, urinary problems, or other chronic conditions. Some need medications every day just to remain comfortable and stable.

Small teeth.
Important care.

Dental disease in small dogs is not something we can ignore simply because their teeth are tiny. It is not only about bad breath, although that is often the first thing people notice. Dental disease can be painful, cause abscessed teeth, and allow infection to spread throughout the body.

Severe dental disease can affect a dog’s organs and may contribute to serious heart problems. Dogs can be in significant pain even when they continue eating and acting normally.

That is why dental care is so important.

We do our best to provide dental cleanings, extractions, and other necessary dental treatment whenever we can afford to do so. Unfortunately, dental procedures can be very expensive, especially when a dog needs multiple extractions, blood work, anesthesia monitoring, and follow-up care.

Once a dog is adopted, ongoing dental upkeep becomes the responsibility of their family.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Regular veterinary care, appropriate dental care, healthy food, and monitoring can help prevent small problems from becoming painful and expensive emergencies.

But even with excellent care, some dogs will still need extensive medical treatment.

They are
still family.

We also have hospice and nursing-home-type dogs who are not waiting for adoption. These dogs may need medications, specialty food, veterinary visits, comfort care, and other support for the rest of their lives.

They still deserve to be comfortable, loved, and cared for every single day.

Their care does not stop simply because they are not going to a forever home.

Food, comfort,
and daily needs.

Food is another ongoing expense. Every dog needs to eat, and some dogs require specialty diets because of kidney disease, urinary issues, allergies, gastrointestinal problems, or other medical conditions.

The cost of food, medications, veterinary care, supplies, and emergency treatment never stops.

Recently, we received an amazing grant to help support our work, and we are incredibly grateful. That grant will make a meaningful difference for the dogs in our care.

But sadly, expenses never stop. Just like the dogs who need forever homes never stop coming.

Another dog.
Another chance.

Every donation helps us say yes to another dog who needs medical care. It helps us provide surgery, testing, medication, food, dental treatment, comfort, and a safe place to heal.

Your donation may help a dog receive the spay or neuter surgery they need. It may help pay for vaccines that protect them from preventable disease.

It may help cover heartworm treatment, blood work, a cardiologist visit, a dental procedure, or the medication that keeps a senior dog comfortable.

It may help provide food for a dog who cannot tolerate a regular diet. It may help us care for a hospice dog who has nowhere else to go.

We know that many people donate because they want to help save lives. We want you to know that your support does exactly that.

Your donation does not disappear into some vague expense. It becomes veterinary care. It becomes medication. It becomes food. It helps provide a warm bed, a safe place to recover, needed dental care, heart medication, and another chance.

We are deeply grateful for every donation, every share, every supply purchase, every foster home, and every person who helps us continue this work.

The need is constant, but so is our commitment to these dogs.

Thank you for helping us care for the ones who need us most.
