ADOPTION PROCESS

A new beginning.
One step at a time.

Good matches begin with care, honesty, and conversation. Here’s what to know before you apply and while you wait.

VOLUNTEER POWERED. DOGS FIRST.

A little patience.
A lot of care.

Deeby’s Senior Chihuahua Rescue is 100% volunteer-based. The people reviewing applications, checking references, and answering emails also have jobs, families, pets, and responsibilities outside of rescue.

We do our best to process applications as quickly as possible. Sometimes it takes a little longer, because we’re giving each application and each dog the care they deserve.

We’re looking for people who take responsible pet ownership seriously and share our commitment to the dogs entrusted to us.

BEFORE YOU APPLY

Care is
the starting point.

Our adoption requirements are an important part of finding responsible, committed homes. Please make sure you meet them before submitting an application.

Our adoption requirements

  • You must be at least 21 years old
  • Appropriate veterinary care
  • Current core vaccinations
  • Spaying or neutering of existing pets
  • Year-round heartworm prevention

Medical exceptions must be for a legitimate reason documented by your veterinarian.

Applications that do not meet these requirements may be declined without a lengthy explanation or additional correspondence.

Adopting from out of state or Canada.

Out-of-state and Canadian adopters are welcome. We do not provide transportation or ship dogs. You must travel to us to pick up your dog. If you need to return your dog, you are responsible for bringing them back to us as well.

Honesty matters.

Providing false information on your application is grounds for automatic denial. We would rather have an honest conversation than discover that veterinary care or living circumstances were deliberately misrepresented.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

Your application.
Our thoughtful review.

Here’s how you can help the process go smoothly.

  1. Apply with care.

Complete the adoption application honestly and thoroughly. Submitting an application does not guarantee approval or adoption.

  2. Allow time for veterinary references.

We contact your veterinarian to verify the information on your application. Veterinary offices may be closed on weekends, and we sometimes need to leave messages or wait for a return call.

If you apply on a Friday, we may not be able to begin checking your veterinary references until Monday.

  3. Keep an eye on your email.

Email is generally how we’ll contact you if we have questions about your application. Please check your inbox and reply. If we don’t hear back, we may assume you’re no longer interested and move on to other applications.

KINDNESS GOES A LONG WAY

Questions are welcome.
Please be kind.

A polite email asking about your application’s status is always welcome, and we try to respond. We understand that you’re excited to hear back.

Please treat our volunteers with patience and respect. Angry or hostile messages about wait times or adoption decisions are not acceptable. There’s a real person on the other end of your email, giving their own time to help these dogs.

Thank you for your patience, kindness, and honesty.
